Description
The ABB RB520 is a compact,integrated robot controller designed specifically for ABB’s smallest collaborative and light industrial robots,most notably the IRB 1010(1 kg payload)and IRB 910INV/SCARA series.Introduced as part of ABB’s“Robotics Built-in”strategy,the RB520 eliminates the need for a traditional external control cabinet by embedding the drive electronics and controller directly into the robot base or a compact wall-mount unit.
This innovation reduces footprint,simplifies installation,lowers cabling costs,and accelerates deployment—making it ideal for high-density automation cells in electronics assembly,lab automation,small-part handling,packaging,and machine tending.
Unlike legacy ABB IRC5 or OmniCore controllers,the RB520 leverages modern EtherCAT-based motion control,OPC UA connectivity,and PC-based engineering tools,aligning with Industry 4.0 and flexible manufacturing trends.

Application Scenarios
✅Electronics Assembly(Asia):
In a smartphone component factory,20 IRB 1010 robots with RB520 controllers are mounted directly on conveyor frames.Each handles camera-based micro-screw insertion.The compact design allows<30 cm spacing between stations—impossible with traditional cabinets.
✅Pharmaceutical Lab Automation(Germany):
An IRB 910INV SCARA with RB520 performs vial capping and labeling inside an ISO Class 5 cleanroom.The absence of external cabinets minimizes particle traps,while OPC UA streams cycle data to the lab MES.
✅Food Packaging(USA):
A RB520-controlled IRB 1010 places chocolates into trays at 60 cycles/minute.It communicates via EtherNet/IP with a Rockwell PLC and rejects misaligned products using integrated vision triggers.
Core Innovations&Advantages
🔹1.Cabinet-Free Architecture
No external controller=70%less floor space
Plug-and-produce:Only power,network,and I/O cables needed
Lower installation cost(no conduit,fewer connectors)
🔹2.Seamless IT/OT Integration
Built-in OPC UA server exposes robot status,alarms,cycle counts
Supports MQTT and REST API via ABB Ability™edge gateway
Ready for cloud monitoring(e.g.,ABB Ability™Genix)
🔹3.Collaborative&Conventional Modes
Can operate in collaborative mode(force-limited,human-robot interaction)
Or high-speed mode behind safety fencing—same hardware,software-configurable
🔹4.Simplified Commissioning
Auto-discovery via RobotStudio
Web-based configuration interface(no teach pendant required for basic setup)
Firmware updates over Ethernet
Programming&Connectivity
RobotStudio®:Full offline simulation,path optimization,and virtual commissioning.
RAPID Code:Standard ABB programming language—supports functions,interrupts,and multitasking.
PLC Integration:Acts as an EtherNet/IP adapter or PROFINET device—PLC can start/stop programs,read I/O,and monitor status.
Vision Integration:Native support for ABB Vision or third-party systems(Cognex,Keyence)via GigE Vision or digital triggers.
